Join the Surry Arts Council for tribute
concert to one of the finest banjo pickers in the world. The lineup
will be announced later in the year, but
will certainly be a great night of bluegrass music. Doug Dillard was
a cornerstone of Mayberry Days, having performed at every festival
through 2011. We will all miss his ability to light up a room with
his grin and his banjo playing. The concert will feature music
and stories from cast members and musicians who all called Douglas
Flint Dillard a friend.
From the Byrds to Arlo Guthrie to Earl Scruggs and dozens of
recordings with the Dillards, Doug Dillard was a major force in
bluegrass music and member of the International Bluegrass Music Hall
of Fame. For over fifty years, this virtuoso banjo picker has toured
the world, worked on feature films like Popeye and Bonnie and Clyde,
and thrilled television audiences with his appearances as Doug
Darling of the Darling Family on The Andy Griffith Show. In the
words of Mitch Jayne: this is 'what banjo picking is all about'.
