The Surry Arts Council celebrates Tommy Jarrell’s birthday each year with a concert, workshops, and presentations. Tommy was a fiddler, banjo player, and singer from Mount Airy who was influential in spreading the intense, bluesy, fiddle-driven Surry County oldtime sound – and making it synonymous around the world with American old-time music.

Tommy Jarrell received the National Endowment for the Arts' National Heritage Fellowship Award in 1982. His fiddle is now in the Smithsonian. Memorabilia from Tommy is in exhibits in the Old- Time Music Heritage Hall at the Historic Earle Theatre.
