PHOTOGRAPHS and HISTORYThe Andy Griffith museum opened on September 26, 2009 with an official ribbon cutting during the 20th celebration of Mayberry Days. The items on display have been collected over nearly a lifetime by Emmett Forrest, who grew up in Mount Airy with Andy Griffith. The collection has been on display in Mount Airy for many years. At its three previous locations it was been enjoyed and appreciated by thousands of people who come to Mount Airy to see Andy's hometown and all it has to offer. The collection now has a permanent home in the Andy Griffith Museum where it will continue to be admired by everyone who see it. Each visit to the Andy Griffith Museum will be different as Mr. Forrest continues to find new items to add to the collection. Some of his favorite items include actual props used on The Andy Griffith Show that were given to him by Andy Griffith personally, including the signs from the Mayberry Courthouse doors and a suit worn by Andy as Ben Matlock. The collection also includes personal items given to Emmett Forrest by other cast members of The Andy Griffith Show as well as friends and associates of Andy Griffith. Also on display are items from Don Knotts (Barney Fife), Maggie Peterson (Charlene Darling), Betty Lynn (Thelma Lou), Earle Hagen (musical director), Hal Smith (Otis Campbell), George Lindsey (Goober) and Jean Carson (Daphne The Fun Girl). The museum was funded in part by Surry County and the North Carolina Rural Center. The building was designed by Christopher Price, AIA of Archimeleon of Mount Airy and constructed by J.G. Coram, Inc. of Mount Airy.
