  • The Surry Arts Council is moving forward with the capital campaign for the multipurpose Arts Center. Many hurdles have been overcome and the plans are currently with the engineers. The facility will be built on City property by the Surry Arts Council and upon completion, the Surry Arts Council will operate the venue. The total cost of the Arts Center including parking lots is $3,200,000. The Surry Arts Council has railed $2,301,175 in cash and pledges, and will begin construction in 2021 as soon as the goal is reached. The Arts Center will operationally self-sustaining from day one.

The Arts Center is a 6,500 square foot, one-story, multipurpose arts venue. The facility will include a 1,225 square foot multipurpose space, office and meeting space, a lobby featuring Mount Airy granite, and a Siamese Twins Museum and space. The exterior will feature green spaces that will be designed by Chip Callaway and will include granite tables and seating. The facility will back up to Hutchens Cleaners and Laundry, and be parallel to Spring Street. It will be located above the Blackmon Amphitheatre and will enhance the amphitheatre experience.

The Surry Arts Council reaches over 2,000 people each week during non-pandemic times. 67,000 guest visited the Andy Griffith Museum in the year immediately prior to the onset of the pandemic. The economic impact on our community from these visitors is significant and has been for many years. This project will target an entirely new demographic in addition to providing new program offerings for our citizens and our guests. The new demographic is much needed right now as we seek to replaced local economic losses. Donors at the $100,000 level will have individual bronze plaques in the lobby of the new facility. $250,000 and above donors will have the opportunity to name spaces.

Thank you for considering a donation in any amount. Honoraria and memorials are welcome. This is an opportunity to recognize loved ones in perpetuity with bronze plaques and naming rights. Please direct questions and/or request for additional information to tanya@surryarts.org.
